The Denbigh Community Center is a 52,800 square-feet facility with a double gymnasium surrounded by an indoor walking track, seven multipurpose rooms, a full-service concession stand/café, a Fitness Room, a Dance Room, an Early Childhood Center with an outdoor playground, and a Teen Center. A zero-depth, color-lighted splash fountain accents the main entrance and the building was constructed with energy-saving features.

Multipurpose Rooms

The seven multi-purpose rooms, ranging in occupancy of 30–200 people, is available for rentals (birthday parties, baby and wedding showers, wedding receptions, and meetings) and hosts Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Instructional Classes (Art, Computers, Sewing, Personal Development, Music, and Nutrition). The Fitness Room is the site of Instructional Classes (Martial Arts, Fitness, and Cheering) and Active Lifestyles (age 50 and up) fitness classes. The Dance Room is used for dance classes offered by the Instructional Class Program and the Active Lifestyles Program as well as being available for rent by dance clubs as rehearsal space.


The 2 full-sized gymnasiums is utilized for sports leagues (Basketball, Field Hockey, Indoor Soccer, and Volleyball), tournaments (local, state, and national), an Active Lifestyles indoor walking program, and special events. The center has lockers, a snack bar, and a lounge area.

Teen Center

The Teen Center is a safe location for teens to meet and make friends as well as participate in fun programmed activities and events. The room features five large flat screen televisions, a computer lab, gaming system (including Xbox, Playstation and Wii), gaming tables including pool, ping pong, air hockey and foosball), homework help, and arts and crafts. A Middle School Afterschool Program (weekly fee of $54) is offered from 3-6:30 p.m. for middle school students Monday through Friday. Transportation is provided from Mary Passage and Dozier middle schools to the center. A drop-in recreation program for middle and high school students is offered Monday - Friday from 7-9 p.m.

Early Childhood Center

The Early Childhood Center, with an outside play area, offers a full-day (Monday – Friday, 6:50 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.) early childhood childcare curriculum-based program for potty trained children ages three and four (weekly fee of $89).
