Petco Foundation Invests in Lifesaving Work of the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter

Grant of $50,000 will extend efforts to save more animal lives in Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson and York County

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter announced it has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its community outreach efforts and off-site adoptions through the funding of an adoption bus.

The Petco Foundation investment will help reach communities that the shelter has not been able to access before. The new adoption bus will help bring awareness to community education and resources that will greatly help the public and their pets.

“We are very grateful to the Petco Foundation for awarding us this lifesaving grant," said Shelter Manager Roger Iles. “The new adoption bus will allow us to get more animals out of the shelter and into their forever homes by taking adoptable animals to off-site events and increase the public’s awareness of our shelter. We encourage folks to look for this new bus out in the community and to stop by and see some of the amazing companion animals that we have for adoption.”

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter is an open-admission shelter providing necessary resources and services to the citizens of each jurisdiction in terms of education, adoption, outreach and animal care. These services are represented by the three goals of the shelter’s mission: Rehome, Reunite and Reeducate, serving four jurisdictions of Hampton Roads.

About the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter

The Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter is a collaborative venture supported by four separate Hampton Roads communities: Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, and York County. This 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is managed and operated by the City of Newport News on behalf of the four jurisdictions. This "open admission" shelter contains a full service veterinary clinic for the shelter animals and has capacity for approximately 100 dogs and 180 cats, as well as pocket pets and other small companion animals. The shelter's primary responsibilities include holding stray animals until they can be reunited with their owners, rehoming owner-surrendered pets, and facilitating pet adoptions. The shelter also houses animal control offices for the participating jurisdictions.

About the Petco Foundation

At the Petco Foundation, we believe that every animal deserves to live its best life. Since 1999, we’ve invested more than $230 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that happen. With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. So far, we’ve helped more than 5.5 million pets find their new loving families, and we’re just getting started. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn more about how you can get involved.
