The Public Information Office is located in Police Headquarters and is staffed by the Communications Manager, one sworn Public Information Officer, one Senior Communications Specialist, one Police Investigative Technician and two additional sworn officers that take call only.
Because the Newport News Police Department is committed to keeping the Community informed, this office is responsible for maintaining a relationship with all media agencies that will allow us to keep the community abreast of the activities of the Department. In addition to preparing news releases regarding significant events involving the Department, this office answers media and public inquiries on a daily basis, and develops and monitors social media content across a variety of platforms.
In addition to media relations, the Public Information Office coordinates the Department's participation in the Crime Line program. This program offers a means for the community to anonymously provide important information on unsolved cases, wanted persons, illegal activities and the location of stolen property, etc. and be eligible for a cash reward if the information leads to an arrest. This program receives no department or city funds and is funded entirely through donations. Anyone who desires to provide a tip to Crime Line should call 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
The Public Information Office is also responsible for internal communications, including the Department's newsletter, and the planning of ceremonies and special events.
