The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is comprised of 2 sub-divisions: the Major Crimes Section and the General Investigations Section. Each section is supervised by a lieutenant who reports directly to the Criminal Investigations Division Commander.
The Major Crimes Section is comprised of the Robbery, Homicide, Special Victims (SVU), Criminal Intelligence Unit, and Forensic Services Unit. The General Investigations Section is comprised of the Fugitive Apprehension & Career Criminal Unit, the Economic Crimes Unit, the Pawn Shop Unit, and the Court Unit. Each unit is supervised by a sergeant who reports directly to their section lieutenant.
The primary mission of the CID is to investigate the complex criminal cases that take place in the City of Newport News. The individual units investigate specific types of crimes as suggested by the unit titles (Robbery investigates robberies, Homicide investigates homicides, rapes and aggravated assaults, Economic Crimes investigates economic crimes, etc.).
