Sign-On Bonus Program

As of 02/01/2017, the Newport News Police Department will be offering a sign-on bonus as an incentive to new officers.

Individuals hired as a Police Officer Recruit will be awarded a $1,000 sign-on bonus at the time of their employment with the Newport News Police Department.  In the event of the employee's resignation from employment or involuntary termination from the City prior to the completion of six (6) months of service, the sign-on bonus shall be reimbursed 100%

Upon successful completion of six (6) months of employment, the employee will be awarded an additional $1,000 bonus, subject to the following repayment agreement:

In the event of the employee's resignation from employment or involuntary termination from the City prior to the completion of two (2) years of service, the second $1,000 bonus shall be repaid according to the following rates and schedule:
 75% if employed for 6 months, but less than 12 months ($750 repayment)
 50% if employed for 12 months, but less than 18 months ($500 repayment)
 25% if employed for 18 months, but less than 24 months ($250 repayment)

The Police Officer/Recruit shall sign an agreement with the City certifying his or her acceptance of the payback rates and schedule at the time the payments are issued.
