Biography
The Honorable Sharon P. Scott, MPA, was re-elected on May 1, 2018 to serve her fifth term as one of two council members who represents the North District of the City of Newport News. Serving on City Council since 2002, she is President of a small, minority-owned business, SPS Professionals, Inc., where she is a Writer, Book Producer and Consultant.
Education & Business
Scott has a Master of Public Administration from University of Phoenix, Bachelor of Arts in English from Christopher Newport University, and an Associate in Science from Paul D. Camp Community College.
City Initiatives
For the good of the city, she has pledged to work with colleagues, business leaders, and citizens to make Newport News One City. Each campaign platform highlighted the need for open government and proactive leadership. She has implemented initiatives that brought about change in her district. She also encourages citizen participation, which created a model of transparency and across the entire city.
Councilwoman Scott hosted Town Hall Meetings on the fourth Monday, nine months of the year, since June 2002. The meetings provide constituents an opportunity to meet, address concerns, and receive updates on relevant issues. Guests and department heads attend meetings to explain projects, answer questions, and provide updates on the North District and city-wide initiatives.
Civic Work
In addition to being an elected official and businesswoman, Scott serves on several boards and commissions, whose goal is to improve the quality of life for the Locality, Region and State. Local and Regional Board appointments include Hampton Roads Planning District Commission, Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, Sister Cites of Newport News, Inc., Newport News/Williamsburg Airport Commission, Hampton Roads Transit Commission, Hampton Roads Regional Jail, Hampton Roads Sports Media Hall of Fame and Community Development Block Grant Committee. She also serves on the Community Economic Development Policy Committee for the National League of Cities (NLC), which proposes resolutions that pertain to citizens across the United States. Scott is presently a member of Virginia Municipal League’s (VML) General Laws Committee. Scott was appointed by Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to serve on the Design Build Review Management Board for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The appointment expired June 2010.

Family & Personal Life
Her passion includes serving others, traveling, reading, writing and fitness. She is an active member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith. She has one son (Darian) and three beautiful granddaughters.
