Water Conservation Plan and Ordinance
Water Conservation Plan and Ordinance
Newport News Waterworks is one of the most efficient water providers on the east coast for several reasons:
-
Voluntary pressure reduction in 1986 to the lowest possible level reduced usage by 2-3 million gallons daily requiring no action by our customers.
-
One of the industry's lowest rates of unaccounted for water (water lost during processing and used for unmetered functions such as line flushing).
-
Ongoing pipe replacement and meter testing/replacement programs to reduce leak potential and leakage reduction.
-
Recycling of treatment water, reclaiming 2-3 million gallons of water.
-
Adoption of a Water Conservation Management Plan and a Water Conservation Ordinance (47.7 kb).
-
A public information office that promotes water conservation at schools, festivals/events, and in the media.
-
Outreach programs to major water users (industry, military, multi-family housing) to help them reduce water consumption.
-
Active participation in the Hampton Roads Water Efficiency Team.
Newport News Waterworks' single-family residents, who represent over half of our customers, use below 70 gallons of water per person per day. This is well below the national average of 100-125 gallons per person per day.
