Waterworks’ Message to Our Customers

Drought Watch

At this time, no water restrictions are specifically requested by Newport News Waterworks although Virginia continues to experience a severe drought across the State. As always, Waterworks encourages its customers to conserve water.

Waterworks will remain alert to drought conditions and will move forward quickly as warrented.

The City’s Water Conservation Ordinance provides for the following four tiers of use restrictions:

Tier 1 - Advisory (Voluntary Conservation)

Tier 2 - Mandatory

Tier 3 - Severe

Tier 4 - Emergency

Tier 1 - Advisory Voluntary Conservation is instituted by the City Manager or the Director of Waterworks if authorized by the City Manager. Tier 2, 3 and 4 restrictions require a declaration of water supply emergency by Newport News City Council via adoption of an ordinance.  If the current severe drought conditions do not improve after a call for Tier 1 conservation, higher levels will likely be imposed soon thereafter.
