Department Overview
The Department of Vehicle & Equipment Services is responsible for managing the City's 1,350 unit fleet. The department purchases and maintains a wide range of vehicles including motorcycles, cars, light and heavy trucks, and a variety of construction and specialty equipment.
Allen R. Ward, Director
Allen has thirty years of experience in municipal vehicle fleet management. The last twenty years were as the Assistant Director of Newport News Department of Vehicle and Equipment Services. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from Old Dominion University.Responsibilities
As Director of Vehicle and Equipment Services, Allen Ward manages the
procurement, maintenance and disposal of the City's 1,350 vehicle
fleet. He is responsible for the development of the vehicle replacement
program and the preparation of equipment specifications. He directs the
maintenance and repair of the fleet and the management of the fuel
inventories. The department works closely with the City Manager's
Office and all City departments to ensure that the appropriate numbers
and types of equipment are available to meet the City's current and future
service priorities and that fleet costs are minimized.
