What is Official Payments?
If you wish to pay by credit card, we have implemented a new program, provided by Official Payments Corporation, by which credit card payments may be processed over the telephone (24 hours a day, 7 days a week), or over the Internet. Pay from the convenience of your home or office. This program accepts Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover/Novus.
What is the fee for using Official Payments?
The fee is based upon the size of the transaction. The following are the most frequent amounts and fees:

| $500.00 - $599.99 | $18.00 |
| $600.00 - $699.99 | $21.00 |
| $700.00 - $799.99 | $24.00 |
| $800.00 - $899.99 | $27.00 |
| $900.00 - $999.99 | $30.00 |
| $1,000.00 - $9,999.99 | 3% |
| $10,000 and up | 2.5% |
Please Note: All fees are paid to Offical Payments Corporation for the cost of providing this service. The City of Newport News does not retain any portion of this fee.
How Do I Pay Over the Phone With Official Payments?
To pay by credit card over the telephone, simply follow the steps below:
- Call 800-2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829) (You will be prompted to enter the following information on your touch tone phone keypad.)
- Enter Jurisdiction Code 1024.
- Press 1 to pay a Personal Property Tax. Press 2 to pay a Real Estate Tax/Stormwater Fee.
- Enter payment information.
- Enter credit card information.
The system will then give you a verbal receipt number. There is a nominal fee for using this service.
