How long do I have to pay a parking fine?
If the parking fine is paid within the thirty (30) business days, you may deduct $5.00 ($25.00 for handicap parking) from the ticket total. For example, I have a $20.00 parking ticket for overtime. I pay within five (5) business days, I write a check for $15.00. If you pay after five (5) business days, the deduction is not allowed.
If a parking fine is not paid within thirty (30) days a Law Enforcement Notice is sent. After thirty (30) days an additional twenty-five dollars ($25.00) fine is levied on the parking ticket and an approximate, 15 days later, a summons is issued. Once a summons has been issued, payment may not be accepted by the Treasurer's Office. You must appear before the Records Management Division of the Police Department (9710 Jefferson Ave, 928-4100 between the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday) to have the summons served.
I mailed my payment on the fourth business day. Will I be penalized if it reaches the Treasurer's Office after the fifth business day?
No. The cashier will view the postmark date, so that you will not be penalized if the payment arrives after the fifth business day.
I mailed my payment on the sixth business day but I had deducted the $5.00 from the ticket amount. What will happen?
Since it is after the fifth business day, your payment and parking ticket will be returned to you. We do not accept partial payments on parking fines.
I feel that I did not deserve the ticket, what can I do?
You should contact the Records Management Division of the Police Department at (757) 926-8794 from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The Treasurer's Office only accepts payment. Any questions or concerns should be directed to the above mentioned office.
