City offices, public libraries, and the landfill will be closed on Friday, July 4 for the Independence Day holiday. Garbage, recycling and bulk waste collections, however, will not be affected by the holiday and will be collected according to the regular schedule.

The City of Newport News is celebrating Independence Day with its 4th of July Stars in the Sky event beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 4, 2008 at Victory Landing Park (23rd Street at the James River). This year’s event will include a new free 4th of July Children’s Area and a special ceremony for the signing of the Army Community Covenant between the City of Newport News and Fort Eustis. At 8:30 p.m., 90’s rockers The Spin Doctors will perform followed by a spectacular fireworks show over the James River at 9:45 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

Keeping Our Kids SafeAfterschool Program Survey

The Keeping Our Kids Safe Violence Prevention Initiative is surveying Newport News families to determine their afterschool time program needs. Safe places and structured activities are very important to the development of young people. The results of this survey will assist our community with developing strategies to meet the afterschool program needs of families in Newport News. Please take a few minutes to complete this survey.

The City of Newport News offers real estate tax relief for elderly and disabled Newport News homeowners. The application period is April 1 through August 31 each year. Relief is available in three levels (full exemption, partial exemption and deferral) depending on income and assets. Any relief awarded during this period will apply to the homeowner’s December 2008 and June 2009 tax bills. Applications are available online and can also be obtained at either location of the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office – 2400 Washington Avenue or 12912 Jefferson Avenue – or by contacting their office at 926-3535 or commish@nngov.com.

Debris Management Plan Receives FEMA Approval

The City of Newport News Public Works Department’s Debris Management Plan has received FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) approval, a requirement for agencies to participate in the Public Assistance (PA) Pilot Program.

Alternate Street Parking for Wednesdays Street Sweeping Scheduled Changed

Effective April 1st, Street Sweeping, which was previously scheduled on Wednesdays, will now take place on Fridays.
