RSS - Info
Description for what RSS is and how to use it.
What is RSS
RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an easy way to be alerted when new content appears on your favorite websites.
RSS-enabled sites have files called "RSS feeds" or "news feeds" that provide links to the latest updates to the site. RSS-enabled feeds on the City site can be recognized by the
icon. To subscribe to the "RSS feed" simply click the RSS feed icon.
When you subscribe to an RSS Feed with the appropriate software, you will be alerted when new information is available - without the need to visit each of the web sites. You can configure the time interval your RSS reader checks the subscribed site.
RSS Feeds on the City Web Site
To use the RSS Feeds on the City Web Site:
- Some browsers have RSS compatible news and feed readers built in. You may use that reader or install one of the RSS compatible news and feed readers listed below. If your browser does not provide a reader you will need to install either a reader plug-in or one of the readers listed below.
- To subscribe to a feed click on the
icon. Depending on your reader, you will either be prompted to subscribe to the feed or shown a page with XML code. If you get the XML page, copy the URL and paste it into your reader.
RSS News and Feed Reader Software
The easiest way to experience RSS is through an RSS "news reader" or "aggregator" for your computer.
A news reader will automatically fetch and organize recent content and provide simple ways to read it. In other words, you spend less time searching for content and more time enjoying it.
Today there is an ever growing list of web browsers, news readers and feed readers that support RSS and the City's new RSS feeds feature.
This is not meant to be a comprehensive listing or an endorsement, but checking these links will give you access to some of the products that can help you take advantage of this interesting new web site feature.
