Co-mingled Residential Recycling

Co-mingled Residential Recycling. Recycling service is provided every other week.

What is co-mingled residential recycling?
The residents of Newport News have the convenience of mixing their recyclables (plastic, paper, glass, etc) in their authorized recycling container.
See below for a list of items that are eligible for recycling!
 
What We CAN Collect
  • aluminum cans and metal food cans
  • aluminum foil and foil products
  • paperboard items (cereal boxes)
  • glass bottles and jars (clear, green, brown)
  • plastic bottles (with a neck and a #1 or #2 on the bottom)
  • corrugated boxes (flattened and no larger than 3' x 3')
  • brown paper grocery bags, magazines, newspaper, telephone books, junk mail (including inserts)

Collection Procedures

Containers must be on the street adjoining your property by 7 a.m. on your day of collection. You may set out your container after 3 p.m. the day before the scheduled collection, and it must be removed by midnight the day of collection. All other times, the container must be at the side or rear of your residence.

How To Prepare Your Recyclables
  • Rinse out all food and beverage containers
  • Discard any containers than cannot be rinsed clean
  • Remove lids and caps (labels may be left on)
  • Flatten boxes and cut in sections no larger than 3' x 3'
  • Place office paper and junk mail in brown paper grocery bags or loose in your bin
  • Cover all recyclables with the container lid to keep dry and reduce litter


What To Do If Your Collection Was Missed

If you have followed all the collection requirements and your recycling collection was missed, call the Public Works Call Center at 757-269-2700.

Optional Wheeled Manual Collection 18-gallon Bins

Optional wheeled manual collection 18-gallon bins are available to residents still receiving weekly collection at a cost of $20 each. Call TFC Recycling at 757-247-5766.

Common Mistakes Residents Make In Recycling

Overall, residents do a great job with preparing their recyclables; however, the following should not be included with your recyclables:
  • NO window pane glass, ceramics, vases and other glassware
  • NO empty oil containers
  • NO lids from bottles or jar
  • NO #1 or #2 plastic containers that are not bottles
  • NO plastic bags
  • NO household paper such as tissues, paper towels and plates, and egg cartons
  • NO aluminum scrap, such as aluminum siding
  • NO styrofoam packaging or "peanuts"

Drop-Off Recycling Sites

Drop-off sites are available to those not served by curbside recycling. The same items listed at the top of this page are accepted at the following sites:
