Co-mingled Residential Recycling.

What is co-mingled residential recycling?
The residents of Newport News have the convenience of mixing their recyclables (plastic, paper, glass, etc.) in their authorized recycling container.
See below for a list of items that are eligible for recycling!

What We CAN Collect
•  Cans – beverage and food cans (emptied & rinsed)
•  Bottles, Jugs & Jars – plastic and glass (emptied & rinsed)
•  Plastic Tubs – i.e. yogurt, butter and cheese tubs (emptied & rinsed)
•  Paperboard items - pantry item boxes, file folders
•  Cardboard - flatten boxes; no larger than 3' x 3'
•  Paper - office paper, paper bags, magazines, newspaper and inserts, telephone books, junk mail

What We CANNOT Collect
•  NO plastic bags (please recycle at most grocery stores)
•  NO styrofoam packaging or "peanuts"
•  NO household paper such as tissues, paper towels and plates, and egg cartons
•  NO yard waste
•  NO clothing or shoes
•  NO window pane glass, ceramics, vases and other glassware
•  NO aluminum scrap, such as aluminum siding
•  NO empty oil containers

Collection Procedures
Containers must be on the street adjoining your property by 7 a.m. on your day of collection. Place your cart 3 feet away from your trash cart, mailbox, cars, etc. You may set out your container after 3 p.m. the day before the scheduled collection, and it must be removed by midnight the day of collection. All other times, the container must be at the side or rear of your residence. To find your collection day, look up your street name at www.nngov.com/public-works/sw/downloads/schedule. Collection is delayed by one day if your scheduled collection day falls on or after a City observed holiday. How To Prepare Your Recyclables
•  Rinse out all food and beverage containers
•  Discard any containers than cannot be rinsed clean
•  Flatten boxes and cut in sections no larger than 3' x 3'
•  Place office paper and junk mail in brown paper grocery bags or loose in your bin
•  Cover all recyclables with the container lid to keep dry and reduce litter

What To Do If Your Collection Was Missed
If you have followed all the collection requirements and your recycling collection was missed, we apologize. Please call 757-933-2311.

Optional wheeled manual collection 18-gallon bins are available to residents still receiving weekly collection. Call 757-933-2311.

Drop-Off Recycling Sites
Drop-off sites are available to those not served by curbside recycling. The same items listed at the top of this page are accepted at the following sites:
