Debris Clean-up After the Storm

Debris Clean-up After the Storm

•  Hold non-storm debris items for a few weeks. This allows the City to collect the true storm debris.
•  Separate brush from bulk. This allows a quicker collection because we can load up the brush in one truck and the other bulk in another truck. The bulk goes to a landfill in Hampton, but the brush can be taken to a nearby compost facility in Newport News, so the turnaround time is faster and the brush – which is typically the greatest amount of storm debris due to our heavy tree canopy -- can be collected more quickly.
•   Expect normal collection of non-storm related bulk to be postponed for at least 3 weeks.
•  Put as much of the small branches as you can fit in your trash cart with the lid closed. Placing small amounts on the road for the claw truck to collect is very time consuming and slows down the collection process; the automated trucks that empty your cart can move much faster
•  Do not put bulk under low wires. Our trucks cannot maneuver the collection arm safely under the wire.
•  Do not put bulk next to cable/utility boxes. Inadvertent damage to these boxes can occur when our view of these boxes is shielded by debris. You could lose TV reception or phone communication as a result.
•  Do not put bulk next to fences/cars. Our operators are good, but accidents sometimes occur. For safety sake, we will not attempt to collect debris placed next to fences or cars.
•  Do not put bulk in the road such that vehicular traffic or storm water flow is hindered. Bulk in the roadway can cause storm water to dam up and loose debris can be carried into the storm drains, which can also cause them to become clogged.
