Household hazardous waste is leftover household products that contain chemicals which may be hazardous to human health and the environment if improperly handled.

What Is Household Hazardous Waste?

Household hazardous waste is leftover household products that contain chemicals which may be hazardous to human health and the environment if improperly handled. Some examples are paints, used oil, antifreeze, car batteries, bleach, rug and upholstery cleaners, and garden chemicals.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Options

The City of Newport News Public Works Department hosts quarterly Household Chemical and Electronics Recycling Collection events.

These events are for NEWPORT NEWS RESIDENTS ONLY!

No City Department, business, or medical waste can be accepted!

Residents of Hampton, York Co., Poquoson, James City, and Williamsburg can call the Virginia Peninsula Public Service Authority (VPPSA) www.vppsa.org at 757-259-9850 for details on HCC events for these localities.
Residents living in the Tidewater (Southside) area can call the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) www.spsa.com at 757-420-4700.
 

The following businesses/agencies can assist residents (in all localities) wishing to dispose of the following hazardous materials between quarterly HCC events. Note: this information is subject to change based on store policies. Please call ahead first to verify that the businesses are still accepting these items.

Other Options for Safe Disposal Between Collection Events
 
** Always Ensure Containers Are Properly Marked With Contents To Avoid Improper Disposal Or Accidental Poisoning **

PAINT
  1. If unopened, check with a charity organization, or theatre group to see if they can use for painting projects.
  2. Give useable leftovers to theatre groups, family, or friends.
  3. If less than a ¼ can, pour mortar mix or kitty litter into can to solidify, reseal, place in plastic bag, then place in garbage container.
  4. If more than a ¼ can, pour paint into bag of mortar mix or kitty litter and proceed as in above item "c".
  5. If paint is hardened, scrape it out into a plastic bag, and dispose of in regular trash. The paint can and lid can be recycled ONLY if completely empty and clean of all paint residue.

PAINT THINNER
Place in a safe location (away from children and pets.) Loosen the cap, and allow the substance to evaporate, discard the EMPTY container in plastic garbage bag inside your trash cart.
These containers ARE NOT recyclable!
 
PESTICIDES/HERBICIDES
Use remaining portions or give to neighbors. Empty pesticide containers should be triple rinsed (spray rinse water on crops/yard before discarding. The empty containers ARE NOT recyclable!
