| Public Works – "We keep the City running!" |
Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for City residents by providing professional public works services to safely and efficiently manage the infrastructure with which we have been entrusted. |
| We are proud to be one of 64 agencies in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Public Works Association. Accreditation demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement in the delivery of public works operations and services to the community. By voluntarily evaluating our policies, procedures and practices against nationally recognized management practices determined appropriate for our agency, we assess our strengths, weaknesses, and how best to improve the delivery of service. The accreditation process involves a thorough internal review of our agency, followed by an onsite accreditation visit whereby a team of reviewers examines our documentation and conducts interviews with selected agency staff as well as chief elected and appointed officials. Newport News Public Works achieved full accreditation in 2003 and re-accreditation in 2006 and 2010. |

To avoid the shattering of glass and the resulting safety issues of glass chards on lawns or streets, items containing glass are not collected as part of your weekly bulk collection service. This includes TVs with glass viewing screens.
The Public Works Department, in concert with its Asset Management System User Departments are proud to introduce a new tool to our Newport News Citizens. This tool is a web site that allows our customers to “Report a Problem or Request a Service”.
