Mission Statement

The mission of the Public Works Department for the City of Newport News, Virginia is to maintain a safe environment within our city facilities, provide and promote environmentally responsible disposal of waste, allow for safe transportation within our community, and protect the environment while maintaining health and safety standards through the management and operation of the sanitary and storm sewer systems, and serve as first responders in emergency situations.

Public Works Service Calendar 2010

Budget constraints this year caused the City to decide not to publish a printed calendar. However, an electronic version of the calendar dates has been created, which will reflect routinely scheduled Public Works services.

What To Do With Unwanted TVs and Computer Monitors

To avoid the shattering of glass and the resulting safety issues of glass chards on lawns or streets, items containing glass are not collected as part of your weekly bulk collection service. This includes TVs with glass viewing screens.

Debris Management Plan Receives FEMA Approval

The City of Newport News Public Works Department’s Debris Management Plan has received FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) approval, a requirement for agencies to participate in the Public Assistance (PA) Pilot Program.
