The City of Newport News was awarded the silver level in the 2011 Green Government Challenge from the Virginia Municipal League (VML). The Green Government Challenge is a friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that not only reduce carbon emissions, but can save local governments money. The Challenge consisted of 11 categories and 30 action items on which the City was rated, including energy efficiency, waste management, community participation and innovative initiatives, to name a few. The Challenge was first established in 2008 and the City has been recognized each year as a Green Government.
The City’s success is due in large part to the Sustainability Team. The team, served by employees throughout City departments, was established to develop best management practices, planning, and investment strategies to reduce energy consumption and promote energy efficiency and sustainability. Reed Fowler, Public Works Director, who has been leading the Sustainability Team initiative, praised the accomplishment stating, “This is an excellent example of a successful implementation of the Sustainability Teams’ goals.”
