USS Bush Sailors To Spend Friday Volunteering In Newport News And Beyond
Kick-off event to be held at the Super Block in downtown Newport News
On Friday, June 19, 2009, more than 1,000 sailors from the USS George H.W. Bush will be spend the day volunteering at numerous organizations throughout Newport News and other Hampton Roads localities.

Bush will be spend the day volunteering at numerous organizations throughout Newport News and other Hampton Roads localities. The kick-off event will be held at 8:00 a.m. at the Super Block in downtown Newport News where over 1,000 sailors will start their day with a mass clean-up effort following a brief ceremony.
“This is a tremendous act of community service by the men and women of the USS George H.W. Bush and we are honored that they are giving back to the community in such a manner,” said Newport News Mayor Joe S. Frank. “We are delighted to have these service members as residents of our City and we thank them for their wonderful spirit of volunteerism.”
Sailors from the USS Bush will be restoring playgrounds and parks, collecting trash and litter, distributing food, landscaping, cleaning, painting and rehabilitating buildings for more than a dozen organizations including the following locations in Newport News.

• Various Newport News parks
Built at Northrop Grumman Newport News and homeported in Norfolk, the USS Bush is scheduled to return to the Newport News shipyard for a six-month period beginning Friday.
The Super Block is located between Washington Avenue and West Avenue and 26th and 28th streets in downtown Newport News.
