2009 Dec 22Newport News residents are encouraged to recycle their natural Christmas trees for mulching this year by either bringing them to the Denbigh Compost Facility, located at 550 Atkinson Way off Warwick Boulevard, or placing them curbside for pickup on normal bulk waste collection days. Whether trees are brought to the facility or placed curbside, all tinsel, ornaments and stands should be removed. Beginning Monday, December 28, natural trees may be brought to the Compost Facility for recycling. No artificial trees can be accepted there. The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; however, it is closed Friday, December 25, Saturday, December 26, Friday, January 1 and Saturday, January 2 for the holidays. For pickup, residents should place natural trees curbside by 7:00 a.m. on their regular bulk waste collection day. As always, trees and yard waste should be separated from other bulk trash.
Last year, 14,000 tons of yard waste and wood was processed as compost and mulch products for local reuse in gardens and landscaping. This represented 56% of the residential recyclables. Overall, the city recycled 26% of the total waste stream of 203,591 tons. The Christmas Tree Recycling program this year will help to further increase the amount of wood waste that is recycled during 2009. Such programs help to increase public awareness of recycling and help the city to meet the state mandated 25% recycling rate, as required of all localities in Virginia.
Citizens can call (757) 269-2700 or (757) 886-7947 for more information. To learn more about recycling and other Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division services, please visit www.nngov.com/public-works/sw.
