The City of Newport News encourages residents of Hampton Roads to attend one of two public meetings on the region’s long-range transit vision plan. The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, in partnership with Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) and the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA), is holding the meetings from 6-8 p.m. with a presentation at 6:30 p.m. at the following locations.

Tuesday, November 30
City Center, Fountain Plaza II, Conference Room
700 Town Center, Drive, Newport News

Wednesday, December 1
Hampton Roads Transit
1500 Monticello Avenue, Norfolk

The Hampton Roads Regional Transit Vision Plan peers into the future of transit – 2025, 2035, and beyond – to imagine what may be possible for the region’s transit services. The plan considers a variety of transit modes, everything from an expanded light rail system, streetcar service, bus rapid transit, commuter and higher-speed rail connections, high-speed ferry, to express and enhanced bus services.

The idea is to see what mode may make the most sense for a given community or corridor. Meeting participants will have an opportunity to ask questions, view a presentation and related materials, and share their thoughts and ideas about the best path to follow.

The envisioned network enables transit riders to make connections among rail, bus, and ferry systems with links to higher-speed intercity rail stations and the region’s two commercial airports.

The vision acknowledges the importance of land use planning to promote transit with an eye toward connecting the region’s major employment centers. The plan emphasizes the importance of compact, mixed-use development in order to support rapid transit service and safe and convenient pedestrian conditions. The plan will help regional and local government select projects for further study.
