NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Snakes in the library! On July 13, children and adults filled the meeting room at Main Street Library to meet more than two dozen snakes and other reptiles.
The Newport News Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program presented “Snakes Alive!” with Ron Cromer, a herpetology specialist. For more than an hour, children and adults learned about snakes, iguanas, lizards and a turtle. Throughout the program, Cromer allowed audience members to view and pet many of the creatures.
“I like when I got to hold the snake,” said 6-year-old Sophia Woodruff.
Cromer explained how to tell the difference between a poisonous snake and a harmless ones, as well. “A lot of times, the show helps people get over their fear,” Cromer explained. But for those still uncomfortable, a “snake-free zone” was available during the touching and petting portions of the program.
The Newport News Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program is free and open to children, teens and adults. It includes reading incentives and activities and continues through July 31. It is generously supported by the Friends of the Newport News Public Library System, Capt. D’s, Fazoli’s, McDonald’s, Golden Corral, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Shoney’s, and the Library of Virginia.
