A FREE shredding event will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Home Depot parking lot, 325 Chatham Drive, Newport News, VA (near the corner of Jefferson and Bland).

One way to protect yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft is to destroy confidential documents. The Shred Day event is sponsored by the Newport News Sheriff's Office and Stealth Shredding, Inc.

Numerous other service providers will be on-hand to discuss resources in the City of Newport News, including the Oyster Point Mariner Lions Club. From their mobile unit, they will offer FREE sight and hearing tests for all ages.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9-million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Identity thieves can rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, or establish utility accounts in the victim's name. The victim may not discover the theft until they are contacted by a debt collector.
