A new book provides previously unknown information and rare photographs about the family of one of the Confederacy’s most famed generals. The book, “Life After J.E.B. Stuart,” recounts the childhood of Mary Marrow Stuart Smith (1889-1985), the Cavalry General’s eldest grandchild, based on her original, never-before-published memoirs.

 

The book’s author, Sean M. Heuvel, a faculty member at Christopher Newport University, will discuss the book, answer questions and provide copies for sale, 10 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Feb. 4, at Main Street Library in Newport News.

 

The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Part of the Newport News Public Library System, Main Street Library is located at 110 Main Street, Newport News, VA 23601. For more information, please call 757-591-4858.

 

More about the book

Mary Marrow Stuart Smith (1889-1985) lived a remarkable life as a respected artist and Virginia educator. The eldest grandchild of famed Confederate Cavalry General J.E.B. Stuart, she belonged to one of the Commonwealth's most celebrated families. Based on her original, never-before-published memoirs, “Life after J.E.B. Stuart” recounts Marrow's childhood as the Stuart family struggled to survive following the Civil War. It explores her efforts to pursue a fine arts education and career within a family known for its male soldiers and politicians. The book contains rare photographs, previously unknown information about the family and a foreword by Marrow's granddaughter.

 

More about the author

Sean M. Heuvel is a faculty member at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, where he teaches in the Department of Leadership and American Studies. He holds a bachelor’s degree in government and master’s degree in higher education administration from The College of William and Mary, and an master’s degree in history from the University of Richmond. Heuvel is also currently pursuing a doctorate in higher education administration at William and Mary.

An active scholar in the fields of history and leadership studies, he has written numerous articles for refereed journals, encyclopedias, and magazines. His interests include higher education history, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, and leadership through the ages. Active in foreign study programs at Christopher Newport University, Heuvel also has lectured at Harris Manchester College, Oxford University, in the United Kingdom. He and his wife Katey and infant son Sean Jr. live in Williamsburg.
