September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the Newport News Public Library System wants to make sure that all children and adults have the smartest card of all – a library card.
During the month of September, all library patrons in good standing who have lost their library cards or who no longer have their library cards can get free paper replacement cards. Replacement paper cards normally cost $1 each. This does not apply to the plastic library cards. Library patrons in good standing are those with less than $5 in fines and fees.
To apply for a library card, any Virginia resident may complete the application form and show proof of name and Virginia address. Valid forms of proof include driver’s license, state ID card, car registration or Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authority picture ID. Checkbooks are no longer accepted as valid proof. There is no minimum age for a child to receive a library card, but a parent or guardian signature is required for children under 18.
Application forms are available at all Newport News Public Libraries. In addition, employees from West Avenue Library will be in the Newport News City Hall lobby, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 12, and Friday, Sept. 19, for library card registration.
Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” said Izabela M. Cieszynski, director of the Newport News Public Library System. “Kids can come to the library to get homework help and check out books, but they can also check out free music, DVDs and use the Internet to make after school life a little more fun. There’s a lot happening at all of the Newport News Public Libraries.”
