Red Hawk, an American Indian of the Cherokee tribe, entertained an audience of 39 with his interactive and educational program, “The Ways of My People,” on Nov. 24 at Grissom Library.
Laughter filled the meeting room as Red Hawk used volunteers Charlotte Acker and Ethan Murray, both age 7, to act out the story of a beautiful hunter and a greedy lizard. Red Hawk used traditional stories, songs, and dances to dispel misconceptions about American Indians.
While playing a drum, Red Hawk taught two dances to a few children from the audience. The boys stomped around the room and shook their rattle-type instruments, while the girls swished their shawls. Red Hawk ended his presentation by playing a peaceful song on the Lakota flute.
“The Ways of My People” was presented by Young Audiences of Virginia.
