America Recycles Day is November 15th and while the Newport News Public Works Recycling Office celebrates recycling every day, this is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States. This year’s theme is “I Recycle” and events are designed to educate, motivate, and inspire others to do the same.
Recycling services, educational activities and volunteer opportunities help to encourage residents of all ages to recycle and to buy recycled products. Following is a sampling of what’s taking place in Newport News.
- A Household Hazardous Waste and e-cycling Collection is scheduled on Saturday, November 13th, from 9 a.m. to noon at Gildersleeve Middle School, 1 Minton Drive (near Todd Stadium). The collection is open to Newport News residents only, and no commercial waste will be accepted. This event closes at noon, and no items can be accepted after that time. These collections are held quarterly.
- Students may participate in Project Learning Tree activities and classroom presentations year round. Sessions are designed to teach children about the triangular recycling symbol and the “closing the loop” practices – Recycling, Buying Recycled, and Source Reduction. A classroom speaker from the Recycling Office is available to Newport News schools by appointment.
- Adopt-A-Spot cleanups are conducted year round to keep roadsides and other areas of the city clean and attractive. Volunteers throughout the community form groups to “adopt” a location and pledge to pick up trash and other debris in designated areas at least four times a year. Many areas of the city are still available to adopt.
To contact the Public Works Recycling Office for details on any of these events or volunteer opportunities, please call 269-2700, or visit our website at www.nngov.com/public-works/sw to learn more about how you can benefit from participating in local recycling programs.
