The City of Newport News was selected to receive a $2,000 grant from the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) in partnership with Keep America Beautiful (KAB). The grant will support the City’s sustainability initiatives in environmental and energy stewardship to the community by assisting local businesses to enhance paper recycling programs.
Sustainability is one of eight strategic initiatives unanimously endorsed by the Newport News City Council in September 2010. Reed Fowler, Public Works Director, has been leading the sustainability initiative to develop specific environmental policies and practical actions that not only improve environmental conditions, but save local government money.
“We are grateful to have been awarded this grant from Keep America Beautiful, and for being recognized as a leader in sustainability,” said Fowler. “This grant will allow us to work with local businesses to assist them in enhancing their paper recycling programs, which will be beneficial to both the environment and our citizens.”
The City’s application for the original grant amount of $500-$1,000 was increased to $2,000 because of the quality of the proposal aimed at empowering local businesses to engage in paper recycling efforts. The program is planned to kick off this fall.
KAB congratulated the City for their award, stating, “Selecting winners from the 132 entries we received was difficult because of the wide range of high-quality opportunities represented by the proposals; however, yours was exceptional, and AF&PA along with Keep America Beautiful, is pleased to be able to help you support your community.”
