Mayor McKinley L. Price was awarded the distinguished Thomas Nelson Medallion last month by Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) President Alvin J. Schexnider. The Thomas Nelson Medallion recognizes citizens who exemplify the spirit and highest ideals of Thomas Nelson – patriot, soldier-statesman, and governor.

In accepting the medallion, Mayor Price said, “It is an honor to receive this recognition from Thomas Nelson Community College. As an integral part of our community and an excellent institution of higher learning, Thomas Nelson impacts the lives of our citizen through education, training, and workforce development. I want to thank President Schexinder and the Board of Directors for this award. I am truly humbled.”

A native of Newport News, Dr. McKinley Price was elected mayor in 2010 and is the city’s first directly elected Black mayor. In addition to formerly serving as a member and chairman of the TNCC Board of Directors, he has also served on the Newport News School Board, the Riverside Health Systems Board of Directors, and the An Achievable Dream Academy Board, among many others.

Dr. Price is the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the President’s Humanitarian Award and the Role Model of the Year Award from the Virginia Peninsula Chapter of 100 Black Men, the Silver Star Award from the Urban League of Hampton Roads, the Humanitarian Award from the National Conference for Community and Justice, the Presidential Citizenship Award from Hampton University, and the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award from the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. In 2005 he was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Daily Press newspaper for co-founding People to People, an organization dedicated to improving race relations and the quality of life in Newport News.

Dr. Price holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Hampton University, and a doctoral degree in Dental Surgery from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He is a Fellow in the Virginia Dental Association, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
