METEOROLOGISTS CAN HELP PREVENT AUTO THEFT

The Newport News Police Department is requesting assistance from the media in preventing auto theft. While the most visible weather reports are seen during the television newscasts, anyone reporting the weather can be a tremendous help in law enforcement’s efforts to reduce auto theft.
Historically, as the weather becomes colder, law enforcement notices a significant increase in the number of cars left unattended with the engine running and of cars being stolen because of this practice. Additionally, we continue to see cases of cars left running while the driver “quickly runs into a convenience store”. Both of these practices provide an open invitation to have the car stolen. Some may argue that they lock the car while it is unattended. However, it only takes a moment for the thief to break a window and drive off with the vehicle.
By mentioning these facts anytime, but especially during weather reports, the media can play a vital role in fighting auto theft throughout Hampton Roads.
While it is a violation of State Code 46.2-1071 to leave an unattended motor vehicle running on a highway, there is no law preventing the same practice on private property.
Media may contact the Public Information Office with questions or requests for interviews.
