Libraries offer easy, new way to listen to books

Playaways will be available for checkout for 14 days at a time

Library patrons can soon check out audio books on the library’s new Playaways, which are the first pre-loaded, self-playing digital audio book.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. 2008 Aug 21

Library patrons can soon check out audio books on the library’s new Playaways, which are the first pre-loaded, self-playing digital audio book.

Half the size of a deck of cards, Playaways are the simplest way to listen to a book on the go. With no tapes or CDs, each unit can hold from two to 80 hours of pre-loaded content. Using clearly marked buttons, Playaways give listeners the ability to move within or between chapters and alter the speed of a narrator’s voice. An automatic bookmark feature remembers where listeners left off.

Beginning Sept. 1, the Newport News Public Library System Library will have the Playaways available for checking out for a period of 14 days. The libraries provide batteries, and patrons will need their own headphones/earphones to listen. Patrons may purchase earbuds at the library for $1.

Titles available include: “Eragon,” “Spanish for Dummies,” “Sex and the City,” “Charlotte’s Web,” “The Purpose Driven Life,” and “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.” Popular authors include: Omar Tyree, Kim Harrison, John Grisham, James Patterson, Sean Covey, Robert B. Parker and Nicholas Sparks.

For more information about Playaways, visit www.playaway.com or call 757-247-8875.
