Oakland Industrial Park in northern Newport News has recently been selected as a “Right Now Site” by the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.
The Right Now Sites Program is designed to identify properties across the state that offer all the essential elements needed for rapid business location. The program establishes minimum infrastructure requirements and other "readiness standards" such as available acreage, utilities, and proximity to highways and interstates.
“This designation is an important one for the economic development efforts of the city,” says Florence Kingston, Director of Development for the City of Newport News. “It allows us to attract and recruit companies by assuring them that they can locate or expand here quickly and without hassle. It’s a real selling point for Newport News.”
In spite of a distressed national economy in recent years, Newport News has made headlines across the country for maintaining its successful economic development climate. In 2008 and 2009, new announcements accounted for nearly $1.8 billion in capital investments.
“In today’s competitive economic development environment, businesses are looking to make site location decisions quickly,” said Liz Povar, Director of Business Development for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership. “The Right Now Sites Program eliminates a company’s risk by providing a shovel-ready solution that shortens the timeframe for a company’s site development. Time savings and risk reduction are significant benefits for companies.”
Oakland Industrial Park was designated a Right Now Site for the Industrial, General Industrial, Light Industrial and Distribution/Warehouse sectors. Having Oakland designated in multiple sectors helps the city continue its efforts to diversify its tax base, and strengthen its economic position within Hampton Roads. Oakland is currently home to more than 20 established industrial, distribution and warehouse companies.
