Applications may be submitted and additional information found on the Department’s web site, www.nngov.com/police. December 12th is the final date available to take the written exam for the next Training Academy session which will begin in mid-January with twenty positions available. The Newport News Police Department is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency and has been recognized nationally for its many innovative initiatives that have been used to reduce crime in the City. Most officers on the Department are young and eagerly use the excellent training they receive along with their knowledge and skills as they work hard to reduce crime.
The academy training consists of classroom and hands on training from experienced and dedicated instructors from throughout the agency and is followed by field training with experienced Field Training Officers.
The City of Newport News offers an excellent benefits package including an assigned take home police car once the officer completes their probation and lives within the City. There are a number of specialty assignments available throughout the Department depending on the officer’s interests, skills and abilities.
