The Newport News Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Fire Prevention Week 2011, October 9-15. This year’s campaign, “It’s Fire Prevention Week. Protect your Family from Fire!”, effectively services to remind us all of the simple actions we can take to keep our homes and families safe from fire during Fire Prevention Week and year-round.

“By taking a few simple precautions like having working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan, keeping things that can burn away from the stove and always turning off space heaters before going to bed, can keep your family safe," said Lisa King, Public Education Coordinator for the Newport News Fire Department.

Additionally, Newport News Fire Department will be having a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the New Fire Station 3 on October 12, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. The new station is located at 10454 Jefferson Avenue in Newport News and this ceremony will officially welcome the new Station and its crew to the neighborhood. The Historic Hilton, Inc. will host a Parade for the transition from the old Hilton Fire Station to the new Station on October 15, 2011 at 8am and the Newport News Fire Department will host an Open House following the parade from 9:00- 12noon at the New Fire Station 3. During the Open House, we will celebrate Fire Prevention Week by educating participants on fire safety. At our annual Open House there will be station tours, demonstrations from NNFD’s Specialty Teams, and activities for children including Sparky the Fire Dog and our Mobile Education Unit.
