The Newport News Fire Department has been awarded the “E3” designation, for “Exemplary Environmental Enterprise” from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality under its Environmental Excellence Program. This state program is administered by the Office of Pollution Prevention and recognizes organizations having environmental management systems that meet specific criteria. An E3 designation indicates that a facility has a fully implemented environmental management system, a dedicated pollution prevention program, and has demonstrated a record of environmental performance.
The City of Newport News is committed to protecting our environment, and the Fire Department Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Program supports the City’s endeavor to be an environmental leader in Hampton Roads and the State. The Fire Department EMS program continues to build on this commitment, and reinforces the City’s position to promote environmental responsibility in local government. Currently there are 14 EMS programs established across 7 City departments, and all have earned recognition from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. In addition to being the most recent City of Newport News EMS program to earn recognition, the Fire Department is also the first department-wide program to have been developed in the City.
