New fee for interlibrary Loan

New service charge applies to requests for materials from other libraries

A $1 service charge will apply to all Interlibrary Loan requests made through the Newport News Public Library System. The new charge will go into effect on July 1, 2011. The fee will be collected from the Library patron at the time the request is placed, and it will apply to each item requested. The charge will be used to cover supplies, shipping, handling and labor. It is nonrefundable.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A $1 service charge will apply to all Interlibrary Loan requests made through the Newport News Public Library System. The new charge will go into effect on July 1, 2011.

The fee will apply to each item requested and be collected from the Library patron at the time the item is received. The charge will be used to cover supplies, shipping and handling. It is nonrefundable.

Interlibrary Loan is a service of the Newport News Public Library System that allows patrons to borrow items – books, DVDs, articles, reports, government documents, and more – from libraries outside of Newport News.

Individuals also can face obstacles such as loaning eligibility, financial costs and time when trying to obtain items from other libraries, but Interlibrary Loan gives patrons eligibility and eliminates distance between a patron and a resource.

It’s an excellent resource for distance learners who can’t make trips to their university library, or anyone who can’t commute to the library.

The Newport News Public Library System provides Interlibrary Loan service to all patrons with a Library card in good standing. Patrons are limited to five active loans at a time, and they must contact their Newport News Public Library at least five days before the due date to request renewals. The loan period is typically 10 days to two months.
