NEWPORT NEWS, Va. 2009 Mar 11Children and teens ages 8 to 17 can now check out laptop computers to do their homework at Grissom, Main Street and Pearl Bailey Libraries. The new program, Learning on Laptops (LOL), was funded by a $143,450 Congressionally Directed grant awarded to the Newport News Public Library System.
Each library will have 20 laptop computers for students to check out during specified time periods and for use only inside the library. The program also includes technology classes and assistance for students. Grant money also was used to purchase technology equipment for Library use.
In order to use the laptops, students need a permission form signed by a parent, proper identification and a library card in good standing. Laptops may be used inside the library for up to two hours for homework use only, and in classes and programs. The laptop computers are available for use 3-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3-5 p.m. on Friday, and 1-5 p.m. on Saturday. Substantial fees will apply for damaged or missing laptop computers or parts.
The Library System received the grant through the support of U.S. Sen. John Warner and U.S. Sen. Jim Webb.
