Library hosts free programs in July

Summer Reading Program, concerts, art classes, and more

Library offers free programs such as painting pottery, cake designing, concerts, magic, and yoga this July.

Library closing

The Library System will be closed Saturday, July 4, for Independence Day.

 

New Hours at West Avenue Library

Beginning July 1, the operating hours of West Avenue Library will be 10 a.m.— 6 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Library will be closed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, weekends and holidays.

Everyone can keep up to date on all of the programs and new services offered by the Newport News Public Library System by receiving the new “Books & Beyond” newsletter by email. Sign up online at http://www.nngov.com/library/custom/newsltr. The newsletter is free, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

 

Your Space!

Teens ages 12 to 17 can express themselves through writing and drawing. Submit one-page written work or one drawing to Juvenile Reference Desk at Grissom Library through July 31. Submissions will be on display, and a panel of staff members will select winners, who receive Best Buy gift cards. Runners-up receive free books.

 

Virginia Employment Commission Website Orientation Sessions

In the Business Center, the Main Street Library staff will offer orientation sessions to help patrons register to use the Virginia Employment Commission site, VAworkconnect.com, 10 a.m. to noon, Mondays, July 6, 20, 27; and 2 to 4 p.m., Thursdays, July 2, 9, 16, 30. Registration is required and is ongoing online at www.nngov.com/library/custom/onlinereg or by calling Main Street Library at 757-591-4858.

 

Introduction to the Business Decision database

Main Street Library staff will teach participants how to use the Business Decision database, located in the Business Information Center at Main Street Library. The small-business-oriented marketing database allows users to create maps based on various statistical data, such as extensive consumer household data, market segmentation data, population forecasts and demographic data. The class is offered 10-11 a.m., Thursday, July 9. Registration is required and is ongoing online at www.nngov.com/library/custom/onlinereg or by calling Main Street Library at 757-591-4858.

 

“Up For Discussion …” Book Club

The adult Book Club will meet 7-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, at Main Street Library to discuss “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd. Registration is required online at www.nngov.com/library/custom/onlinereg or by calling Main Street Library at 757-591-4858.

 

Painting Pottery Party

Marlene Bealer with Starving Artist Studio will consult with patrons on painting ceramic bisque and provide all paints and supplies, 3-5 p.m., Saturday, July 18, at Pearl Bailey Library. Summer Concert Series: Classical Guitarist Peter Fletcher

Peter Fletcher, a classical guitarist who has won numerous awards and performed worldwide including at Carnegie Hall, will present classical guitar music, 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, July 20, at Main Street Library. No registration is required.

 

Introduction to the Foundation Directory Online

Main Street Library staff will teach participants how to use the Foundation Directory Online database, which allows grant-seekers to search for grants and research potential donors. This class will be offered 3-4 p.m., on Tuesday, July 21, in the Business Information Center at Main Street Library. Summer Concert Series: American Folk Music: Storytelling through Song

Jonathan Lopez, an experienced musician and professor of sociology at Old Dominion University, will perform American Folk songs and discuss folk music and storytelling songs throughout American history. His performances are 4-5 p.m., Wednesday, July 22, at West Avenue Library, and 2:30-3:30 p.m., Saturday, July 25, at Grissom Library. No registration is required.

 

Art of Cake Designing

Patricia Jackson, aka Patti Cake, will teach adults the basics of cake decorating, 7-8 p.m., Thursday, July 23, at Pearl Bailey Library. Registration is required and begins June 23 online at www.nngov.com/library/custom/onlinereg or by calling Pearl Bailey Library at 757-247-8677.

 

Loosely Knit Group

Everyone is welcome to join the Loosely Knit Group, which meets 9:30-11:30 a.m. every first and third Thursday of each month at Grissom Library. Anyone who enjoys knitting, crocheting, or any craft is welcome, and no registration is required.

 

Bookmobile

The Newport News Public Library System’s Bookmobile makes scheduled stops Mondays through Thursdays, except for holidays. The summer schedule is available online at http://www.nngov.com/library/resources/bkmschedule or call (757) 591-4858 for information. The Bookmobile is wheelchair accessible.

 

Computer classes

Registration begins July 1 for August classes online at www.nngov.com/library/custom/onlinereg or by calling the respective library. Classes are offered on an ongoing basis covering various topics, including computer and Internet basics, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, resume writing and more. Summer Reading Programs

Master the Art of Reading

For each library book read through Friday, July 31, adults ages 18 and older can enter drawings at Newport News Libraries. The more books read, the more chances to win.  Prizes include notepads, bookmarks, coffee mugs and goodies or the grand prize, tickets to a show and dinner for two. Upcoming programs include concerts, art lessons, cooking classes, writing workshops and author talks.

 

Summer Reading Program for Children and Teens

Children and teens can get creative and express themselves during the Summer Reading Program. Children of all ages can read books and win prizes through Friday, July 31. Children and teens will win prizes based on the number of minutes they read.  Prizes are awarded on three levels. Children who are 12 years old can choose to participate in either the children’s or the teens’ program. Participants sign up any time through July 31. Special programs and events offer fun and education on the theme of  Be Creative @ Your Library and a separate program for teens, Express Yourself @ Your Library. Teens ages 12 – 17 also may volunteer at the Libraries for the Summer Reading Program. Some programs require registration. See program descriptions and schedules below.

 

Summer Reading Program Descriptions

 

Tie Dyeing with Sharpies

Kids ages 6-11 are invited to bring pre-washed white or lightly colored cotton T-shirt, socks, or painters' hat to tie-dye using permanent markers in assorted colors.  All participants must provide their own item for dyeing and NO polyester or blends.

 

Board Games Galore for School Age Kids and their Families

Teams of two kids, ages 6-11, or families may play an assortment of traditional board games: Candy Land, Checkers, Connect Four, Lady Bugs, Old Maids and Scrabble.

 

Board Games Galore for Teens

Teams of two or more teens may play an assortment of traditional board games -- Chess, Checkers, Scrabble and WordSpot -- for prizes.

 

Make and Take CD Picture Frame

Teens, ages 12-18, use old, unscratched CD cases, insert their own pictures and decorate the outside. Participants will need to bring at least four pictures/photos from home.

 

Basic Step-by-Step Cartoon Drawing Techniques for Teens

Local artist Ed Condra will lead teens in the basics of cartoon drawing techniques.

 

Cartooning with Ed Condra

Local artist Ed Condra will teach basic cartooning skills for children ages 6-11.

 

Teen Movie: "Twilight"

Teens can watch the popular movie based on the first in a series of books by Stephanie Meyer.

 

Family Mask-erade

All ages can show off their creativity by making personalized masks, and enjoying a special treat.

 

Learning on Laptops: Photo Fun for Teens

Youth ages 12-17 can learn how to locate, select, import and save photos. Participants will also practice skills such as editing and saving photos as well as cutting and pasting pictures to a document In order to use the laptops, teens must have a library card and signed parental permission. 

 

Teen Movie:  "High School Musical 3"

Teens ages 12-17can watch the popular movie “High School Musical 3: Senior Year.”

 

Monet's Garden

Kids ages 6-11 can decorate their own flowerpot and plant seeds to take home.

 

Teen DDR Night

Teens ages 12-17 can compete in Dance Dance Revolution on the Wii gaming system.

 

Teen Knit & Crochet Night

Teens 12-17 can bring their knitting or crochet projects and have fun while working.  Beginners welcome.

 

Teen Wrap Party featuring Guitar Hero

Teens 12-17 can finish off the summer by playing Guitar Hero on the Wii gaming system and enjoying great food and more.

 

Therapy Dogs

Trainers from Therapy Dogs International will give a demonstration of their dogs' skills and abilities, and will answer questions about the therapy dog training process. For children ages 6-11.

 

Barefoot Puppets present: "Dreamtime: Stories from Down Under"

Barefoot Puppet Theatre presents a wonderful production for all ages! This show was inspired by three traditional tales of the Aborigines of Australia and is told through the eyes of Billy, an inquisitive young platypus.

 

Kathleen Fogarty: From Story to Song

Singer/songwriter and former broadcast journalist Kathleen Fogarty shares her love of children's literature through stories and songs for children.

 

Balloon Creatures and Magic with Miss Susan

Miss Susan will perform magic tricks and create balloon creatures. Each child ages 6-11 will get a balloon creature to take home.

 

Virginia Living Museum presents Amazon Journeys

Presenters from the Virginia Living Museum will discuss and show live examples of life found along the Amazon River. 

 

Ron Cromer Presents: Snakes Alive!

Ron Cromer will present a program on the lives and habits of snakes. Live snakes will be present, with hands-on and petting opportunities for all ages.

 

Uncle Ty-Rone of Ty-Rone's World

Ty-Rone's World is a fun and high-energy ventriloquism show with lots of audience participation geared to today's youth and families with self-produced positive hip-hop music and comedy.

 

Yoga for Children with Radiant Child’s Yoga

Yoga instructor Linetta Davis will demonstrate and teach basic Yoga moves for children ages 6-11 for 30 to 45 minutes. 

 

I Can Do It! by Magician Harold Wood

Harold Wood performs magic acts, juggling feats and unicycle-riding with audience participation for all ages.

 

Kari Brimhall Presents: "OUCH!" A Band-Aid Story

Kari Brimhall will help kids ages 6 -11 get motivated to write by sharing her stories and inviting them to write their own. Program will last 30 - 45 minutes.

 

Teen Thriller Thursdays

Every other Thursday beginning June 25, teens ages 12-17 can enjoy a thrilling movie, Wii games, and Tie Dye T’s.
