The 2011 Water For People Campaign received a generous $1,000 donation from Mr. Jack Clark and Mr. Jim Nicholos representing the Rotary Club of James City County. Water For People, a charity organization headquartered in Denver, Colorado, raises awareness and funds for clean drinking water and adequate sanitation for children and families in need.

The local Water For People Campaign is spearheaded by a committee of the Virginia Section American Water Works Association and is coordinated by representatives from Newport News Waterworks, engineering firms and businesses.

Support for Water For People began in 2005 as a Newport News Waterworks employee giving campaign that raised over $2,100. The following year, the employees invited the local business community to join the campaign and the success of that continuing partnership has culminated in a six-year total of more than $87,400 to Water For People. Today this once local campaign has merged into a statewide campaign involving the entire drinking water community.

Water For People assists people in developing countries to improve quality of life by supporting the development of locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and hygiene education programs. Around the world 884 million people do not have access to safe drinking water and 2.5 billion are without adequate sanitation facilities. Every day, nearly 6,000 people who share our planet die from water-related illnesses, and the vast majority are children. Water For People’s vision is a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation; a world where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease.
