Hours change for West Avenue Library

Beginning July 1, West Avenue Library in downtown Newport News will be open 10 a.m. — 6 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. 2009 May 22

The West Avenue Library will be open fewer hours each week beginning July 1. The change is a result of the requirement of the City of Newport News for the Newport News Public Library System to reduce its spending for Fiscal Year 2010, which begins July 1.

The West Avenue Library’s new operating hours will be 10 a.m. — 6 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It will be closed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, weekends and holidays.

Located at the corner of 30th Street and West Avenue in downtown Newport News, West Avenue Library offers full services  including:

·         Current DVDs to check out free for seven days

·         Free computer, Internet usage

·         Free Wireless Internet access

·         Books on CD and music CDs

·         Current bestsellers

·         Children’s collection

·         Free programs all year

·         Limited free parking

Listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places because of its Georgian Revival architecture and because of its significance in the social history of Newport News, West Avenue Library has been operating since officially opening on Oct. 14, 1929, and will celebrate its 80th anniversary this fall.

It also features a mural depicting Captain Christopher Newport at Newport News Point on May 2, 1607, that was commissioned in 1955 for the 350th anniversary of the Jamestown Landing. Hampton artist Allan D. Jones Jr. created a 27-foot-long oil painting that is hanging inside the Library, located at 2907 West Avenue. The mural was restored in 2007 by Mark Lewis with the Chrysler Museum of Art for the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown Landing.
