2011 Jul 28The 2011 Peninsula Hazard Mitigation Plan Update is in its final phase of development and is ready for citizen review and comment. The City of Newport News is holding a public meeting at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 4th, at the Main Street Library, 110 Main Street to discuss the plan, obtain feedback from citizens, and answer questions. Citizens can also review the plan and complete a survey online at www.remtac.org/mitigation.
The plan, originally developed in 2006 and updated on a five-year cycle, covers the cities of Hampton, Newport News, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. The purpose of the plan is to provide a factual basis for prioritizing hazard mitigation activities within the region. The plan identifies hazards, assesses the vulnerability of local and state critical facilities, estimates potential losses to local and state critical facilities, and develops and priorities mitigation activities in each locality. Hazards addressed in the plan include flooding, hurricanes, tropical storms, tornadoes nor’easters, thunderstorms, winter storms, extreme heat, dam failure, wildfire, drought, earthquakes, biological hazards/epidemics, landslides, and tsunamis.
Citizens can call the City’s Division of Emergency Management at (757) 269-2900 with questions.
