Newport News Fire Department Asks Residents to Review Fire Safety Procedures
2010 Jan 29With recent local area fires, the Newport News Fire Department is reminding residents to:
- Check smoke alarms! If you are a Newport News homeowner without working smoke alarms, call the Newport News Fire Department’s Smoke Alarm Hotline at (757) 926-8009 to have an alarm(s) installed for free.
- Make sure your family has a home escape plan! Practice a home escape drill with your family. Designate an outside meeting place.
- Space heaters need space! In times of economic difficulties and colder weather, people often use supplemental heating. The rule is to have at least three feet of space around a space heater. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Space heaters should be turned off every time you leave the room and before going to bed.
- Fireplaces should be inspected annually. When using your fireplace, make sure that you do not leave a fire unattended. Dispose of ash appropriately. Wood stoves should be of solid construction and design and Underwriters Laboratory (UL) tested. Do not use flammable liquids to start a fire and never burn charcoal indoors. It is also wise to have a carbon monoxide detector installed to warn of any dangers from carbon monoxide poisoning.
- If you need any additional information, please call the Newport News Fire Department’s Public Education Office at (757)926-8404 or visit our website at www.nngov.com/fire.
