2011 Aug 10

The Newport News Police Department will hold three “Field of Friends” events during August (one in each precinct). The first event will take place at An Achievable Dream Academy at 726 16th Street on Saturday, August 13, 2010, from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.

The “Field of Friends” program began in 2007 when a police officer spotted several children playing in a maggot-infested dumpster. The program continues to be a means for the Department to maintain relationships throughout the community, in particular with the youth, by giving them the chance to play games, enjoy rides, food and free school supplies for children ages 5–15 (while they last), all while experiencing positive interaction with police officers.

This year’s events are sponsored by the Newport News Police Department, The City of Newport News, the 2011 Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula, ArcaMax Reality, Huntington Ingalls Industries, Les Hommes Civic and Social Club of Hampton, Old Point National Bank, Prudential Towne Reality, Sentara Spectrum Foundation, U.S Coast Guard and Zel Technologies.

Dates and times for the remaining Field of Friends events are:

  • Friday, Aug. 19 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Boys and Girls Club at 429 Thorncliff Drive
  • Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Boys & Girls Club at 705 Adams Drive

Media inquiries may be directed to the Police Public Information Office. Other questions may be directed to the Police Department’s Community Programs Office at (757) 928-4295.
