The Newport News Police Department will recognize officers, civilians and citizens for numerous outstanding acts during an awards ceremony this evening, September 16, 2009. The ceremony will take place 7:00 P.M. at the Scottish Rite Center located at 64 Saunders Road in Newport News.

Included in the awards will be lifesaving medals presented to two officers whose individual actions on separate occasions contributed to saving the lives of two infant children. Additionally, several officers will receive the Bronze Medal of Valor for their actions on two separate occasions, the Featherstone Apartments fire where officers evacuated numerous residents from a burning building and an incident where officers had responded to a stabbing and fire and entered a smoke filled building to insure it was cleared for firefighters to do their job.

There are several additional awards that will be presented including those to citizens whose quick action saved lives or assisted police in other ways without regard for their own safety. The recipients of quarterly awards for January through March and April through June will also be recognized.

In addition to the awards presentations, the Department will celebrate the promotions of Assistant Chief Lorenzo L. Sheppard, Captain Randy A. Franklin and Captain Francis L. Hileman and thirteen master police officers.

Assistant Chief Sheppard will oversee the Investigative Division. Captain Franklin will command the Central Precinct and Captain Hileman will command the South Precinct.

The media is invited and encouraged to cover this event. Please contact Lou Thurston at 757-532-0840 regarding any special arrangements that may be necessary.
