CITY BEGINS DAMAGE ASSESSMENT PROCESS

The City of Newport News has resumed normal business hours and has begun to assess storm related damage throughout the City. Initial assessments indicate no widespread catastrophic damage and it is anticipated that overall damage to public and private property will be minor to moderate.

During a 24-hour period, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, November 12, the City’s Emergency Communications received over 1,000 calls with over 240 specifically for Fire/EMS. This is a 300% increase in Fire/EMS calls over the same time period last week.

City Offices
City offices are observing normal business hours, with the exception of the Denbigh location of the Commissioner of the Revenue and Treasurer's office, which is closed due to power outages.
Parks and Recreation Programs and Cultural and Special Events
• Since Newport News Public Schools will be closed on Friday, November 13, all Parks and Recreation school age programs will be consolidated to the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center and will be open from 8:50 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• All Recreation instructional programs are cancelled for Friday, November 13.
• The Brittingham-Midtown Community Center will open at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, November 13.
• The Oyster Point Oyster Roast scheduled for Friday, November 13 has been cancelled.
• All performances and events at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center scheduled through Sunday, November 15 have been cancelled.

Solid Waste Collections
Due to inclement weather, all solid waste collections, garbage, recycling and bulk waste, have been cancelled for Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13. Make up collections will occur as follows:

• For the week of November 9, the regularly scheduled Wednesday collections will take place on Saturday, November 14 and the regularly scheduled Thursday collections will occur on Monday, November 16.
• For the week of November 16, all regularly scheduled collections will be delayed one day – Monday's collections will take place on Tuesday, Tuesday's on Wednesday, Wednesday's on Thursday and Thursday's on Friday.

Please do not place you carts curbside until your collection day. Your patience is greatly appreciated. For questions on solid waste, debris and stormwater issues, call the Public Works Call Center at 757-269-2700.
 
Streets
Please note that streets that have experienced significant flooding have been blocked off. Do not attempt to drive down flooded or blocked streets. There are many traffic lights that are out around the city. Citizens are reminded to come to a four way stop at all intersections without working traffic signals.
