2011 Jul 22

On Monday, July 25, 2011, from 10:00 A.M. until noon Newport News Police Officers will be available at the Virgil I. Grissom Library to inspect child safety seats and insure they are installed correctly. The officers will also install child safety seats brought to the location.

This event will be the first of regularly scheduled opportunities for parents, grandparents and others who transport small children to be certain that the child’s car seat is properly installed and able to protect the child in the event of a crash.

The Grissom library is located at 366 DeShazor Drive in the northern part of the City.

Additional opportunities will be available at the Police Department’s Community Outreach Center located at 10188 Warwick Boulevard from 10:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. on each of the following dates in 2011, August 17, September 21, October 19, November 16 and December 21.

The Newport News Police Department wishes to remind all motorists that children under the age of eight years being transported in any motor vehicle manufactured after January 1, 1968 are required to be properly secured in a device that meets the United States Department of Transportation standards. Also, rear facing safety seats are to be installed in the rear seat of the vehicle. In the event the vehicle does not have a rear seat, the safety seat may be placed in the front seat ONLY if there is no passenger airbag or the passenger airbag has been disabled. Additionally, children under the age of 18 are required to be properly secured in an approved seatbelt.
