FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Newport News Sheriff's Deputies Set Sail to Help the Shriners
Sheriff's office to participate in Cardboard Regatta to benefit Shriner's Hospital.
2011 Aug 19"When I heard about the 'Apprentice Cardboard Boat Regatta' I knew my division would want to join in on the fun while helping the Shriners Hospital," said Lt. Kandyce Patrick, Commander of Civil Enforcement. "The team building opportunity is great," she added.
This will be the first year for the Newport News Sheriff's Office to enter a boat in the event sponsored by Apprentice School student chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME). The object of the competition is to construct a boat out of cardboard, tape, and glue and make it float. The boat actually has to do more than float. It must be sturdy enough to paddle in a race against other teams.

The Cardboard Regatta is a perfect fit for these law enforcement officers. "We play as hard as we work," said Lt. Patrick grinning.
Tracey Scudieri, one of the event planners, said "The event is open to the public and for everyone wanting a good laugh. It is definitely going to be a hoot!" She also noted that concessions will be available. Plus -- and most importantly for a fundraiser -- donations are being accepted.
