Effective October 1, 2010, the City of Newport News is rescinding the September 17,2010 ban on burning. The ban on burning included recreational fires, and fires inestablished fire pit/outdoor fireplaces at approved campgrounds or private property. The ban did not apply to the use of charcoal, natural gas, and propane self-contained stoves and barbeque grills.

Residents are reminded that burning of trash, debris, yard clippings, etc. is prohibited in the City of Newport News.

City officials will continuously monitor weather conditions and periodically re-evaluate the fire risk to determine when and if to re-institute a ban on burning.

Any questions should be directed to the Fire Marshal’s Office at (757) 247-8873.
